The Ultimate Guide to Oud

Discover the world's most precious olfactory treasure

Oud, also known as agarwood, is one of the rarest and most precious ingredients in oriental perfumery. This comprehensive guide invites you to explore its fascinating universe.

What is Oud?

Oud is a dark aromatic resin produced by the Aquilaria tree when infected by a specific fungus. This infection triggers a natural defense reaction, transforming the wood into a precious material with deep and complex notes. Only 2% of Aquilaria trees naturally produce oud, explaining its exceptional rarity.

Origins and Extraction

Oud comes primarily from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Vietnam, India, and Malaysia. Extraction is a long and meticulous process. Once the infected tree is identified, the resinous wood is carefully extracted and then distilled for several days to obtain pure essence. Sometimes 70 kg of wood is needed to produce barely 20 ml of essential oil.

Olfactory Notes

Oud offers a rich and captivating olfactory palette: deep woody notes, slightly acrid smoky accents, subtle animalic touches, nuances of leather and resin. Each origin has its unique character: Cambodian oud is sweet and medicinal, Vietnamese is smokier and spicier, Indian is earthy and profound.

How to Wear Oud

For beginners, start with fragrances where oud is sublimated by floral notes (rose, jasmine) or citrus. Apply moderately on pulse points: wrists, neck, behind ears. Oud evolves beautifully over hours - be patient and let it develop on your skin. In hot climates, it reveals all its splendor.

Recommended Pairings

Oud harmoniously blends with Damascus rose (timeless classic), saffron (spicy alliance), amber and musk (oriental depth), vanilla (gourmand sweetness), and patchouli (earthy intensity).

Expert Tips

  • Favor natural oud over chemical syntheses
